CORRELATION BETWEEN SELF-CONCEPT AND LIFESTYLE IN ELDERLLY WITH HYPERTENSION IN THE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER OF ULEE KRENG OF BANDA ACEH IN 2014
ABSTRACT
Every year there is an
increase in the incidence of disease in the elderly, especially hypertension. There
are self-concept changes in the elderly
resulting in disruption of self-concept.
In the elderly, changes tend to occur due
to physical conditions decline experienced thus it affects the lifestyle of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship
between self-concept and lifestyle in elderly with
hypertension. This study used quantitative method
with correlative design
and cross-sectional study method. Samples
were collected by using purposive sampling technique
with the total population of 153 people and samples
of 60 respondents. The data were
collected by using a guided
interviews with questionnaire. The
questionnaire consists of 20
items about the self-concept in the form of dichotomous choice scale and 16 items
of questions about lifestyle in elderly with hypertension
in Likert scale. Data were analyzed with Spearman
Rank Correlation test.
The results showed that in general
self-concept (p-value
0.000), body image (p-value 0.019), ideal self
(p-value 0.000), self-esteem (p-value 0.001), role
(p-value 0.002), and
identity (p-value 0.003) were
correlated with lifestyle. Based on the results of the study it is expected that nurses and families
improve the self-concept of elderly with hypertension that his lifestyle would
be better.
